September is National Yoga Month, “a national observance and awareness campaign held during the month of September to educate about the health benefits of yoga and to inspire a healthy lifestyle” (Wikipedia). I unintentionally celebrated in a big way. September was a super busy yoga month for me.
Besides my normal home practice, I attended a couple of fun yoga events. First, I attended my local Global Mala. I celebrated the International Day of Peace with 108 sun salutations with my fellow yogi sisters and brothers in the heart of Birmingham at Railroad Park. It was a typical Alabama super-hot September Saturday, but it was amazing (next year someone please remind me to wear shorts!).
I also spent this past weekend (also my birthday) at the Yogi Fellowship Retreat at Callaway Gardens. It was hosted by Jasper Wolfe of Conscious Body Healing Arts Center and Shannon Skipper. It was a perfect way to spend my birthday. It was a mix of yoga, meditation, introspection, fellowship, rest, and an amazing sweaty bike ride. I hope to make it back next year. I can’t recommend this retreat enough. Great for anyone – all levels of yoga experience, all ages, genders, etc. Just go.
And to top it off – in September I started teaching my first regular on-going yoga class at my local YMCA. Starting out I’m teaching every Tuesday night and one Sunday afternoon a month. I really look forward to this new adventure!
